066 — Dreams, Poetry & Sex with Evergreen Hericks, PhD

Bee Mandala oct 2020.jpg

Susan Evergreen Hericks, PhD has an artistic and psychological approach to being human. Her day to day work involves supporting graduate students who are becoming healers and clinicians. An artist and lover of beauty medicine, ceremony, and social justice, she has a varied background in academia (English, Theology/Ethics, Depth Psychology), rites of passage work and wilderness guiding, ceremonial play and art, and sex positive education.

Evergreen has been active in her local community with numerous projects including co-designing Ojai’s annual community Mandala, which involves hundreds of painters of all ages. On a smaller scale, Evergreen loves creating original masks and painting on large cardboard. Her current passions are for sharing poetry as medicine, dreamwork practice with anyone who wants to do it, and creating a family of odd masks and costumes in which to visit her fellow humans with joy and mystery.

Dr. Fred and Evergreen’s wide-ranging conversation today explores the following:

  • The roles of ceremonial play and art

  • Evergreen’s role in creating the annual Ojai Community Mandala

  • The medicinal potential of poetry

  • How poetry is economical

  • Exploring dreams as a window into our souls and psyches

  • Growing comfortable with “weirdness”

  • Taboos of discussing human sexuality

  • Loss of ritualistic and ceremonial practice in our culture

  • The cyclical nature of everything

  • How Evergreen received her name

  • Finding the Yes, and managing the No

  • Choosing what brings you alive...or not
