008 — Advocate for Humanity with Dennis Sandow

Dr. Fred first met Dennis Sandow through an online course he took from Humberto Maturana’s organization, Matríztica.

Dennis Sandow was completely unprepared for what he encountered when as a college student in the 1970s he visited a state institution for people with developmental disabilities. Shaken and shocked by the experience, Dennis made an oath to dedicate his life’s work to closing such institutions. He then worked as a scientist-practitioner in the liberation movement of people with developmental disabilities, providing evidence that they could live outside institutions and within communities. This led to a cascade of inspiring experiences in defense of humanity. Much of the episode also centers around the work of Dennis’ friend and colleague, the Chilean biologist-turned-philosopher, Humberto Maturana.

Here is some of what you’ll learn from Dr. Fred’s fascinating conversation with Dennis Sandow:

  • The insidious connection between asylums and the eugenics movement

  • Dennis’ startling discovery as he set out to collect an evidence base for the productivity of a "non-productive" population

  • The limitations of “logic theory,” and how analysis “kills” the world around us

  • How Humberto Maturana’s work leads to “lifting the psychic curtain”

  • How Dr. Fred uses his "capacity to reset"
